What about obtaining spare parts for an imported MX-5?

There is a long-standing myth (mainly perpetuated by Mazda UK franchised main dealers) that an imported MX-5 is somehow built differently to a UK specification MX-5, using different parts. In actual fact, ALL MX-5s are, and always have been, built in the same factory in Hiroshima IN JAPAN. They are not manufactured, or assembled anywhere else in the World.

Is it more expensive to insure an import?

No. Back in the early days of importing, a lot of the mainstream insurance companies charged a premium for insuring an import. This was mainly due to the fact that they hadn’t bothered to do their homework properly!

What is the SVA Test?

In order for any imported used car to be legally used on British roads, it must undergo a Government SVA (Single Vehicle Approval) test and inspection to ensure that it complies with British Type-Approval regulations.

What does MX5 City do to each imported car?

We carry out all the importation and registration work required. This involves: Preparing and submitting each car for the Government SVA type-approval inspection, MOT , converting the speedometer from KPH to MPH and fitting a rear fog lamp. As well as the essential work, we also give the car a full service, fit a new cam-belt, carry out a 150 point inspection, rectify any paintwork defects, replace any worn items such as hoods, brake discs and pads, tyres, batteries, interior trim components, etc.

What is the difference between an Imported MX-5 and a UK MX-5?

All MX-5s have been built on the same production line in Hiroshima, Japan and there is virtually no difference between cars meant for the Japanese market and those sent to the UK. The only outwardly visible difference on Mk1 cars is a slightly different shape rear number plate holder, high level brake light and “Eunos” badges.
