Mazda MX-5 1989 > 1998

The first generation of MX-5’s sold over 400,000 units and was sold from 1989 - 1998. The first generation models can be referred to as MK1’s or NA which is the model chassis number

 

Features and information for the standard MX-5 Mk1 (NA) model:

  • Pop up headlights
  • UK versions were only available with a 1.6 litre 114 bhp engine from 1990 - 1993
  • 1.8 litre 130 bhp engines replaced the 1.6 litre engine in UK from 1993 - 1995
  • From 1995 - 1998 both 1.6 litre and 1.8 litre engines were produced and supplied and a 1.8i was also released featuring ABS, Electric mirror’s, airbags and power steering with the basic model.
  • Japanese imports have the chassis number NA and UK versions have JMZ NA as a chassis number. Although still widely referred to as the NA Model
  • Imported models that were originally sold in Japan are Eunos models and in America they are sold as Miata’s.

Mazda MX-5 Gleneagles 1800cc >

Produced: 1995 > 1996

Only 400 units were made of this edition that was painted in Montego blue with specially made 15” alloy wheels with locking wheel nuts and Dunlop SP2000 tyres included in the package. The interior trim is a champagne colour and is continuous through the dash and door trim. The standard package gave a matching tonneau cover with tartan edge to match the tartan hand book, gleneagles logo on the black leather steering wheel, cockpit brace, Clarion CD player and power steering.

Mazda MX-5 Merlot 1800cc

Produced: 1996

Mazda produced 600 units of this car and it was finished in Vin Rouge Mica named after the Merlot wine as it was closest in colour. Interior is grey with burgundy piping, wooden effect centre console, wood gear knob and wooden handbrake sleeve. The exterior has colour coded mud flaps with specially made 15” alloy wheels with locking wheel nuts and Dunlop SP2000 tyres included in the package. The package also included power steering, security immobiliser and Clarion CD player.

Mazda MX-5 Berkeley 1800cc

Produced: 1998

This special edition was finished in Sparkle Green; only 400 hundred units were made and were produced just before the launch of the second generation of the MX-5. The interior trim has black and grey leather seats with matching door panels, Momo leather steering wheel, leather gear knob, leather handbrake sleeve, wood effect trim, Clarion CD player and chrome cockpit brace.

This edition also has specially made 15” alloy wheels with locking wheel nuts; chrome boot rack and chrome scuff plates, power steering and security immobiliser.

Mazda MX-5 California 1800cc

Produced: 1995

Finished in sunburst yellow there were only 300 of this edition produced but is one of the most popular out of the Mk1 Limited editions. The interior has cloth seats, sports steering wheel, plaque the cars build number and a leather owners wallet. This edition also has specially made 15” alloy wheels with locking wheel nuts and low profile tyres. This car marked the 5 th anniversary of the MX-5.

Mazda MX-5 BBR Turbo 1600cc

Produced: 1990 > 1991

There were around 850 units made and was only finished in red black or white. This was made for performance and has a turbo conversion kit that was implemented by Brodie Britain Racing hence the BBR. This also had enhancements available such as a limited slip differential, sports suspension, 15” OZ alloy wheels with locking wheel nuts and rear bumper.

Mazda MX-5 Ltd Edition 1800cc

Produced: 1991

Finished in British Racing Green there were only 250 units made available in the short period it was manufactured. They added colour coded 15” wheels with locking wheel nuts, tan leather seats, deep pile carpets, wooden steering wheel, wooden gear knob and handbrake grip. The car was supplied with a plaque verifying the unique code of the car which was also on the owner’s handbook, an embossed keyring and certificate. Standard spec included; central locking, electric windows, stainless steel scuff plates, Clarion radio cassette, analogue clock and generally have stick on number plate

Mazda MX-5 SE 1600cc

Produced: 1992 > 1993

This car was finished in Brilliant Black and only 200 units were made it has specially made 15” polished alloys with locking wheel nuts and low profile tyres. The interior was given tan leather seats, deep pile carpets, wooden steering wheel, wooden gear knob and handbrake grip. This SE model has abs, power steering stainless steel scuff plates, and electric aerial boot release with stainless steel scuff plates as standard. There is a 1 st and 2nd release but the only difference was the wheels were painted for the 2 nd release.

Mazda MX-5 Classic 1800cc

Produced: 1997

This car was finished in brilliant black and only 400 units were made. The interior in finished with black leather seats with red stitching, wood dash kit, Momo leather steering wheel, Radio cassette and a chrome cockpit brace. The exterior has stainless steel scuff plates, 15” inch alloy wheels with locking wheel nuts, security immobiliser, high level stop lamp and power steering all as standard.

Mazda MX-5 Monaco 1600cc

Produced: 1996 - 1997

This car was finished in British Racing Green and tan roof the interior was standard.

Mazda MX-5 Dakar 1800cc

Produced: 1997

This car was finished in twilight blue and only 400 units were made. Car interior was given grey seats with blue piping and matching Dakar mats. The car had wood dash kit, Momo leather steering wheel, Radio cassette and a chrome cockpit brace. The exterior has stainless steel scuff plates, 152 inch alloy wheels with locking wheel nuts, security immobiliser and power steering all as standard.

Mazda MX-5 Monza 1600cc

Produced: 1997

This special edition was finished in British racing green. The interior was the same as the standard 1600cc model were at this time of the production with black cloth seats, security immobiliser and high level brake light. The Monza had unique Monza decals on the rear quarter panels and bonnet. This edition had 14” alloy wheels with locking wheel nuts.

Mazda MX-5 Harvard 1800cc

Produced: 1997

This car was finished in silver stone and only 500 units were made. The exterior had 15" alloy wheels with locking wheel nuts, Pirelli P6000 tyres and unique Harvard badge. The interior trim is burgundy leather with grey piping, wood dash kit, Momo leather steering wheel, Radio cassette and a chrome cockpit brace.

Mazda MX-5 Eunos V-Special 1600cc &1800cc

Produced: 1990 >

This car was finished in Neo Green and Brilliant Black. The interior trim was tan leather complimented by a Nardi wood rimmed steering wheel, wooden gear knob and handbrake cover. The hood was provided in Black or Tan and came with stainless.

Mazda MX-5 J-Limited 1600cc

Produced: 1991

This edition was finished in sunburst yellow with black cloth interior. Extra’s included; Nardi wood rimmed steering wheel, wooden gear knob and handbrake cover. Only 800 units were produced.

Mazda MX-5 J-Limited II 1800cc

Produced: 1994

This second edition of the J-Limited was finished in Sunburst yellow with a 1800cc engine and sported a black A-Pillar and 14” seven spoke alloys. Only 800 units were produced the same as its predecessor. Extra’s included; Nardi wood rimmed steering wheel, wooden gear knob and handbrake cover.

Mazda MX-5 VR-Limited 1800cc

Produced: 1995-1996

This edition was finished in Art Vin Red Mica with stone leather seats complimented matching carpets and hood. Only 700 were produced. The interior sported black leather steering wheel and chrome finishing’s. The second release was finished in Excellent Green Mica and black leather interior with a dark green hood.

Mazda MX-5 Eunos S-Special 1600cc 1800cc

Produced: 1992 - 1993

This car was finished in Classis Red, Brilliant Black and Perky Blue. The interior was finished in black cloth with complimenting black leather rimmed steering wheel and leather gear knob and gaiter.
