The Exocet Project!
The Exocet Project!
Or what to do with a rusty MX-5...This year's winter project was to build an Exocet! No, not a French missile! It's a brand new MX-5 based kit car designed by MEV of Mansfield, which utilises the entire power plant, running gear and suspension from an MX-5, but weighing in at roughly half as much, we reckon it's going to fly.... Click the pictures to view image galleries:Our donor vehicle was a 1.8 Mk2. The entire power plant, suspension, brakes, steering, wiring harness and fuel system was stripped out. We then set about reconditioning or replacing all the components with new. The beautifully manufactured chassis was supplied to us, ready powder coated in black, by MEV in Mansfield. Designed to be ultra lightweight and rigid and with more than a passing resemblance to an Ariel Atom frame, it's an impressive piece of kit. Click the pictures to view image galleries:Whilst preparing all the components for assembly, we also took the opportunity to replace all the suspension bushes with new polyurethane bushes for improved handling, as well as a fully adjustable Gaz coil-over suspension setup. All new brakes were installed, with stainless steel braided hoses all round. A full stainless steel performance exhausts system was fitted, with 4 branch header, cat by-pass pipe and polished back-box with twin tail pipes. Induction is K&N 57i cone filter. As well as the standard kit setup supplied by MEV, we also opted for a set of matching lightweight seats with colour coded TRS 4 point harnesses, Hella lighting units and Team Dynamics Pro-Race 1.2 lightweight 16x7 multispoke alloys, fitted with Yokohama 205/45x16 tyres. To improve handling and looks, the wheelbase has been widened by 64mm, and the suspension lowered by approximately 60mm. Once assembled the car was 4 wheel laser aligned to ensure the geometry was correct. A 2.5 degree camber angle was employed front and rear with 1mm of toe in front and rear. Cadwell Park Test Day!First outing for the car was a trackday at Cadwell Park. Apart from being my favorite racing circuit, I reckoned that the 18 bends and undulations of the famous Lincolnshire track would be the perfect test bed. The results were very impressive! The car far exceeded all expectations! Weighing in at around half the weight of a standard MX-5 and with improved performance from the tuned engine, it was always going to be fast, but I had no idea how amazing it was going to be around corners too! The lovely, tight suspension setup made easy work of the challenging Cadwell circuit, effortlessly zipping past all the boy racers in their Evos, Porsches and Lotus Elises! The Ultimate track Day CarI have raced fully race prepped MX-5 Mk1s and Mk3s around Cadwell many times, but the Exocet would leave them all standing. It's the nearest thing you can get to a go-cart and best of all, it's road legal! Although it would be pretty useless for the weekly Tesco shopping trip.
